Las Vegas Pubcon 2006 (OPEC Videos)

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Don’t expect much writing as I will be in Vegas all this week for Pubcon.

I hope this week in addition to talking to people about Search Engines / Internet stuff I hope to learn more about the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The past few times I’ve talked to people about Oil they bring up OPEC. I have no clue if they are right or not.

For those who like to listen to things while they work, Panel Discussion - The Role of OPEC in a New Energy Era is quite interesting.

Google – Behind the Screen

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Check out this 50 minute documentary on Google. This is not the typical fluffy piece we have seen on ABC or CBS with the worlds most popular search engine.

In this film the interviewers ask some very tough questions making several Google employees squirm in their chair a bit.

The documentary addresses how Google ranks pages with its algorithm. Google saying it is based on links (what a surprise).

But more interesting was a behind the scenes look at how Google is attempting to digitize thousands of books from the worlds greatest libraries.

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin Appearance in Latest South Park Episode Disturbs UK TV Watchdog

Friday, October 27th, 2006

Reported on CNN, John Beyer of UK TV watchdog Mediawatch said: "This is such bad taste and the makers of ‘South Park’ should review their decision to show it. Steve’s family are still grieving.

"South Park" maker Comedy Central defended the episode. A spokesperson for the company said: "It has offended people in the past and probably will again. Regular watchers would not be shocked."

I am a regular watcher and will admit I was taken back for only a second. Then I remembered I was watching South Park and that’s why I watch it, shock value.

Thanks to Hot Air for the short version of this video and the entertaining debate over it!

Stop Comparing To Hitler

Friday, September 22nd, 2006

This trend of comparing everything to Hitler has gotten out of hand. (I’m guilty of sometimes doing this myself.) Once again on the drive into work this morning I heard another reference made with regards to our Administration and Hitler.

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show, please speak to the people!

Manipulation of Information with Mass Media

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

The last post I wrote on the 9/11 documentary had me thinking about how easy it is for film editors to take footage from one source which represented one type of story and use parts of it to recreate a completely opposite message.

I am not saying the documentary I posted about in the previous post was a combination of manipulated archive footage but I will admit that while watching it, the thought had crossed my mind.

Sometimes it is difficult to spot media manipulation and propaganda, other times it is just obvious.

Do you remember Stanley Kubricks’ 1980 masterpiece, The Shining? It was a horrific movie with Jack Nicholson going psycho on his family while caretaking a fancy hotel in the death of winter in the Colorado Rockies.

In this funny clip, taking the same footage from the movie, a little slicing and dicing and a friendly voice over one can create any message they want.

9/11 Press for Truth

Sunday, September 17th, 2006

I was sent an email this morning informing me of a new documentary that has been recently released regarding the possible negligence of the Bush Administration on the events of 9/11.

Titled 9/11 Press for Truth, 1 hr 24 min, this documentary is

Adapting Paul Thompson’s definitive Complete 9/11 Timeline (published by HarperCollins as ‘The Terror Timeline’), the filmmakers collaborate with documentary veterans Globalvision (‘WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception’, ‘Beyond JFK’) to stitch together rare overlooked news clips, buried stories, and government press conferences, revealing a pattern of official lies, deception and spin. As a result, a very different picture of 9/11 emerges, one that raises new and more pressing questions.

What actions were taken by top government officials who received dozens of specific warnings before the attack? Was Osama Bin Laden and his top al Qaeda leadership allowed to escape U.S. forces in Afghanistan? And what has been the reason for the deliberate obscuring of evidence for state sponsorship? Perhaps the most important one of all: Why, five years later, are so many of the families’ questions still unanswered?

By posting this video and the other 9/11 videos on this blog does not mean that I subscribe to the conspiracy theories regarding the United States Governments involvement with the attacks. What I do have are unanswered questions regarding these events and why our Administration continues to get caught in out right lies.

When watching this video you are made aware of several facts. The first fact being that the amount of information regarding these events is beyond the average citizen’s comprehension. There are people who have devoted every waking second of last 5 years attempting to uncover every morsel of information they could yet they are still perplexed by many of the actions demonstrated by the United States Government leading up to and after 9.11. With all the information they have uncovered they still have many unanswered questions.

This leads me to the second fact which you are made aware of by this documentary, the importance of news media in our society. It’s just a reality that there is only so much time in our lives to follow events of major stories as they unfold. American citizens vote for policy based upon the information provided by the media and in order for Americans to ensure our society is progressing we must criticize our national news media as much as we criticize our Government.

Spike Lee: When the Levees Were Blown Up?

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

HBO has just released When the Levees Broke, a 4 hour documentary on Hurricane Katrina and directed by Do the Right Things’, Spike Lee. This was probably up there as one of the hardest films I’ve seen since Schindler’s List.

In October, 2005 Spike Lee made an appearance on Bill Maher’s Real Time HBO show making unsubstantiated allegations on why the levees fell. Lee tried to express to us viewers how the “powers that be” at one time had made a decision to blow the levees thus flooding out the poor to save the rich. He then went on to say he was in the process of putting together a new documentary that would tell the real story of what happened to the citizens of New Orleans after Katrina hit.

I immediately found Spike Lee’s statements on Bill Maher’s show to be completely irresponsible and I had to restrain myself from jump side-kicking my plasma television.

Since watching that Bill Maher episode I was convinced Spike Lee was going to create a Michael Moore Fahrenheit 9-11 piece of garbage. I found the idea that our government could be involved with something as sadistic as blowing up the levee system to be asinine and incomprehensible. Since I heard Lee’s statements I had to see this documentary.

I am sure like many of you; I was glued to my television set following Hurricane Katrina. I found myself confused and overwhelmed with so many emotions as the days continued to tick with no sign of any help.

That week I saw events unfold that I have never witnessed before in my life causing me to seriously do some thinking about our government and how the United States of America treats their poor.

I was screaming at my television; why don’t they fly helicopters over those people and drop medical supplies? Why don’t they drop food? Where is the army? (yea yea yea, don’t say Iraq, thats to easy). Where are our leaders? Who are leading these events? Where is their support? They need help!!!!

Growing up in Los Angeles my whole life I knew nothing about New Orleans apart from Mardi Gras so when I heard that there had been dozens if not hundreds of scientific reports going back many years regarding the stability of the levees I flipped my lid.

For weeks I was in a daze wondering how the richest country in the world could allow such a travesty to happen. Yes, the Hurricane a was natural disaster and no one could prevent such a thing but even Holland had built “Maaslandkering” a massive series of gates in the ocean that would protect the Dutch from a chance of a one in a million storm hitting them and flooding their below sea level country. I’ve known about this for years just from watching the Discovery Channel.

So much for American ingenuity!

Then to compound such neglect by not having an evacuation plan for the tens of thousands of citizens who had no means was something I could never imagine in a country like the United States. Granted some people made the choice not to leave but most had no choice at all. Reports by the scientific community knew about this population and no one created an emergency plan with them in mind.

You can probably understand my response when I saw the likes of Spike Lee on Bill Maher making those statements about the Levees. As if the issue was not bad enough, I felt it was criminal for him to spread propaganda and misrepresent the truth.

This week, over the course of two nights I watched all four hours of Spike Lee’s, When the Levees Broke. Apart from a few short scenes from some folks who probably have every right to believe the Levees were blown, Lee’s main focus was brilliant.

The documentary focused on the fact that this was much more then a race issue; it was a social class issue. The only problem with this documentary was that it was not long enough. Not that I could stand to watch more but there is just so much more story to tell.

There are some folks who have posted comments around the web that this documentary is nothing more then left wing propaganda to blame Bush. I found apart from a few interviews from some rightfully scornful people; this was not a Bush bashing film. Spike Lee places the blame on those who deserve it and continues on to show us things our news fails to. How up to 2 months ago (when he completed the movie) many of the victims were still waiting for their first FEMA checks from their government and from their insurance companies.

Just when you don’t think the story could get much worse Lee had filmed homeowners speaking with Mayor, Ray Nagin. They are explaining how they have owned their own homes for over 30 years and that they are not the poor refugees the media had made them out to be.

They are American citizens who had paid their mortgages on time every month in addition to that they paid their insurance premiums to assist them in a time of emergency. They go on to explain that even though they had covered themselves with flood insurance, their insurance companies are now changing the rules mid game with what their willing to payout.

Many today still have no place to live.

My first opinion regarding this movie was wrong. If anything, this movie will expose the real United States for what it is to the world, not that they don’t already know.

You Must Watch the Dark Side! Bush Administration knew Iraq Was Not Connected to 911

Saturday, July 8th, 2006

Want to know why we are in Iraq? Want to know what was going on in the minds of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Powell, the rest of the Administration and CIA that lead the United States to Iraq?

You must watch this!, a 1.5 hour PBS Frontline documentary called The Dark Side. The footage is available for all to see online.

“Amid revelations about faulty prewar intelligence and a scandal surrounding the indictment of the vice president’s chief of staff and presidential adviser, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, FRONTLINE goes behind the headlines to investigate the internal war that was waged between the intelligence community and Richard Bruce Cheney, the most powerful vice president in the nation’s history.”

“A lot of what needs to be done here will have to be done quietly, without any discussion, using sources and methods that are available to our intelligence agencies,” Cheney told Americans just after 9/11. He warned the public that the government would have to operate on the “dark side.”

“Early in the Bush administration, Cheney placed a group of allies throughout the government who advocated a robust and pre-emptive foreign policy, especially regarding Iraq. But a potential obstacle was Tenet, a holdover from the Clinton administration who had survived the transition by bypassing Cheney and creating a personal bond with the president.”

I watched this a week ago and have been struggling to write a blog about it since. I think after watching this, you will see why nothing more needs to be said.

David Chappelle - The Internet

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

The MySpace topic I posted before got me thinking about the Internet and I started to think of this funny video by Comedy Central’s David Chappelle.
