Internet Explorer (IE) 7 Slow Since Vista Upgrade

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

I only use IE once in a while which is why I have not caught this issue till now but Internet Explorer is painfully slow since I upgraded to Vista. So slow the browser feels it has staled and I have had to hit Ctrl Alt Delete – jump into Task Manager and manually kill the application.

I did some looking around and came across an update Microsoft has released for this published 1/29/2007

Brief Description

This update resolves a performance issue with the Internet Explorer Phishing Filter when visiting web pages that contain multiple frames or when multiple frame navigations occur quickly.

I have installed it and it appears to have fixed the problem.

Windows Live Mail desktop beta & Vista

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Vista WidgetI bash Microsoft enough I thought today I should let everyone know how much I dig Windows Live Mail desktop beta & Vista.

As I wrote previously Microsoft got rid of Outlook Express with Vista and that I was a bit pissed that they did this since I needed a new program that could handle using Hotmail as well as my other POP3 accounts.

I’ve now been using this new program for about a week and it is slick. It allows me to manage multiple email accounts but in a way that I have not used before. It handles my sending mail from various accounts without me having to remember who I meant to send from.

What I really like is how I can view all my new Unread Mail in one folder even though the actual mail has been categorized for me in the appropriate subfolders; before I had to look all over the place when I got new mail because I had so many filters moving things around.

I still have the same filters but now I only need to look in one place.

In addition to using Windows Live Mail the past week, I have been using Vista. People have been warning me left right and center about the issues they have been having with it. So far I have really had no big issues, apart from Outlook which I wrote about last week.

Vista is by far the sleekest operating system to date and I am finding it is very smooth to use.

One of the things I am enjoying is how the operating system handles multiple Internet connections (wireless and connected). In addition, navigating from window to window is so much more enjoyable. Just the way the graphics of my open windows now look, it creates this feeling that things are not so clunky.

I’ve added some widgets to my desktop that informs me of my CPU usage and memory. Even with some big graphics / cpu / memory hungry applications and with my Window Media Center running, the RPM’s are running super low.

Basically since Vista, everything I use opens up much quicker then before. Now I should note I did spend a lot of time preparing for the upgrade. I made sure all my drivers were up to date and applications were compatible.

I ran multiple diagnostics from HP and Microsoft before upgrading. This could be the reason why my experience thus far has been excellent.

Describing The Hula-hoop

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Hula HoopExplaining to people a vision, the new masterful concept which will one day make billions upon billions of dollars is without a doubt one of the most daunting tasks an entrepreneur experiences.

Your job as an entrepreneur is to sell ideas to many people. You have to sell your ideas to developers, engineers, product development specialists, marketing and sales.

If you find that you have to explain something multiple times before people truly grasp your concepts this is a sign that you’re pitching something sophisticated. Sophisticated concepts take quite a bit more time to sell and require a highly customized marketing plan to target that unique market.

Then again, the flipside to highly sophisticated concepts are those that are so simple people just don’t get it. I sometimes think about the movie the Hudsucker Proxy with Tim Robbins. He has the idea for the Hula-hoop. He spends sometime in the movie showing people what the Hula-hoop looks like on a napkin. Basically, it’s a circle on a piece of paper and its quite funny watching him run around holding up this napkin with a drawn circle. He says “You know, it’s for kids”.

3 Steps To Getting A Credit Card With No US ID

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

While making a deposit today at my local Los Angeles Bank of America branch I started to think about the many news stories I’ve read regarding Bank of America’s Los Angeles pilot program to provide credit cards to illegal immigrants. I was thinking about how these stories seemed to focus on the aspects of the potential credit card fraud and how legitimate clients would have to absorb the costs. Additionally I thought about role Bank of America was playing by “aiding and abetting” criminal activity. (more…)

I’m Another Year Older Today and Shandy Turned 1

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Today is my birthday and I am another year older but more importantly ShandyKing has turned 1.

I get asked all the time, what the hell is a ShandyKing and how did I come up with that name?

It was about a year ago this time I took some serious interest in the pod-casting world. Actually, I think this was over the holiday season last year. I spent hours looking around the internet for any podcast I could get my hands on and listen to anything related to Internet Marketing. (more…)

Skype LinkSys CIT200

The title of this post is about as tech geeky as I’ve ever written. I’ve decided to pick up a new LinkSys CIT200 Wireless phone so I can use Skype and make cheaper telephone calls to my friends and family around the world.

The whole concept behind Skype is sweet and with it now being around for as long as it has I thought I would not have any issues getting up and running. (more…)

Controlling Your Image When Sharing Videos on Your Blog

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

This week several people have asked me about the difficulty in creating videos and placing them up on a company Blog. As it turns out one of the sites I frequent daily, SEOmoz.org, did just that.

SEOmoz is run by Rand Fishkin who last night uploaded a neat little video with him and his staff talking about the Wikipedia. In the spirit of being a Moz and sharing openly to the world, this was a cool idea. He specifically asked the readers of his blog to provide feedback as to what they could improve upon for future videos.

Since this was their first go at it, expectedly there were quite a few things that could be done better. Just basics like sound, lighting and set-planning.

What struck me as odd was when the video finished. SEOmoz chose to use Metacafe to host their video content and Metacafe offers us viewers the option to watch additional videos when you’re done watching the original.

As you can see from the picture below take a look at the choices Metacafe offered us, “Cheating Wife”, “Real or Not” and “Celebrity Up-Skirt”.

Seomoz upskirt videos

I have nothing against and don’t mind watching good Celebrity Up-Skirt videos but to see this content on Rand’s company website made me double take.

Knowing Rand and the SEOmoz crew I am sure this was not done on purpose and I am sure they will fix this as soon as possible. But it just goes to show that even the best Internet Marketers have to double check everything before placing it live on their company website.

Playing with videos and distributing them has never been easier. As you can see Metacafe offers one solutions. Just be sure you cover all the angles before releasing your videos on your company blog.

Speaking of angles, I watched the “Celebrity Up-Skirt” video and it’s not worth recommending.
