ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? You really sent me a check for $1.07?
Lets break down all the costs associated with this:
- Ink
- Paper
- Stamp
- Mail processing resources (Sorting, Bagging)
- Mail transportation costs (Bag loading, Gas, Time spent placing check in mail box)
And there is my costs:
- Time spent opening letter
- Time spent going to bank
- Ink wasted endorsing check to bank
- Gas & Auto resources waisted going to bank
Other costs associated with check:
- Bank tellers time to process check
- Bank time to clear the check
- Postage costs to send cleared check back to state.
It is no wonder our state is in trouble.

I agree that its ridiculous, but look at the marginal cost of mailing *one more* letter. In this case, yours for $1.07. The state has virtually no cost at this point.
You do.
Crazy that you can’t have it directly deposited or something along those lines, but in the end it is your choice to expend $X in resources to cash it.

And the time I spent complaining about it!

There was actually a case in england a few years ago of a taxman who flew first class to track down a guy in Kenya who owed the equivalent of $140, I think it cost around $3000 to get it. The guy, when interviewed, said ‘All they had to do was ask, I never got any of their letters before’…

Here in Sweden the Stockholm state sent me a check of 0,10 $ and the cost to cash in it was 4$. So don’t be surprised about this, the government people will always be a mystery.

That is just plain ridiculous! I would have rather donated the $1.00 to cancer research or road repairs!

I guess they are obligated to send you the check, but still, I can see how this is not worth doing =P

Not sure what you expect them to do? Even if they draw a line at like $2, there will always be someone who was like what!? $2.01!? imagine the cost….
