Power of a Killer Buzz

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Recently I’ve been reading about the highly successful 1999 launch of Half.com. Half.com is a website which sells books, movies, music and video games. Out of all the companies I could be reading about, why am I focusing on Half.com?

Going back to the heights of the dotcom boom when billions of advertising dollars were thrown down the drain, Half.com took a completely different approach. It was an approach so novel and it worked so well that they ended up being purchased from Ebay for nearly $300 million dollars six months following the launch of the business. (more…)

The Risk of Rewarding Ideas

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Ideas seem to strike at the worst possible time for me. Just as I am lying in bed watching the last show of the evening come to its conclusion and my breathing becomes shallower as I prepare to finally fall asleep.

My eyes become heavy with the glow of the television putting me into a semiconscious state. Then without warning my mind awakens to a random thought I’ve never before had. Neurons flux, blood starts to pulsate and my heart begins to beat rapidly. Immediately I open my eyes with one compulsive thought in my mind, it’s the birth of a new idea! (more…)

When they say: “You will never find anyone better than me!
I tend to respond with, “Give me ten minutes and I will show you at least a dozen people whose work is much better than yours. The only reason we are talking now is because their work is so good, they are not for hire.” (more…)

With my wife resting up and taking it a bit easy, I have taken over as Master Chef of the ShandyKing household. This means I’ve had to come up with substantially more creative ideas than ordering takeout Indian food or heating Kraft macaroni & cheese. (more…)

Women & Their Stupid Little Dogs

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Stupid DogsIf there is one thing I hate about Studio City it’s seeing wannabe movie stars shop for coffee with their stupid little dogs.

Nothing screams “LOOK AT ME” more than a B rated actress trying to be all incognito wearing a baseball cap and huge bug eyed glass’s while carrying a stupid little dog like a purse accessory.

Yes, I am a pet person and I love dogs but seeing these women while waiting in line to get coffee drives me up the wall. What drives me even more crazy is how they come off like they don’t really want to be noticed, but if you truly don’t acknowledge them they make sure you do by putting on a little scene with their stupid little dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to bring dogs into restaurants? I am not talking about sitting outside with your dog under the table. I am talking about women bringing dogs inside the restaurants and sticking them in the corner of the booth like their tossing a purse.

This is one of the dumbest trends I’ve seen to hit Los Angeles in a long time and I hope it dies a quick death.

Seriously dogs are meant to walk along the side of you. They’re meant to chase other dogs and do things that dogs have been doing since we domesticated them. They’re meant to lick their own ass and the asses of other dogs with dignity!

Dogs are not meant to be stuck inside a women’s purse or match their owners shoes!

As much as I hate to say it, but this is job for Dick Masterson.

Have You Noticed My Google Adsense Ad’s Aren’t Contextually Targeted

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

When you see LinkSys advertisements delivered by Google on posts such as the one I wrote about NASCAR, it makes you think something has to be off with their contextual analysis of my pages.

I thought Google contextually delivers advertisements based on the copy of the page. It appears (hat tip to Jen) Google may have decided my entire domain’s theme is about LinkSys Routers, thus serving ads on every shandyking.com page about linksys.

Why?

A theory: Back in February one of my posts was dugg and it made it to diggs home page. (Thanks Chris). This post was about linksys routers and the digg effect was so strong I’ve been ranking in the top 15 on Google for the term “linksys”.

But!

My blog really has nothing to do with LinkSys. Yes, that one post was about the topic of routers and perhaps this post could qualify as well since I am using the terms Linksys, but ask any of my 3 loyal readers and they will tell you my blog’s theme is certainly not about linksys routers. It’s a blog about nothing…

Now What…

Google, fix it or tell me what to do. Contextually serve ads based on the content of my pages. And if you are, then I would like to know how to fix it because at the end of the day these advertisements are not targeting the right audience.
