Compete Rank

I just upgraded my FireFox Extension, Search Status, to 1.19 and now I have something called “Compete Rank”.

Take a look at what Compete Rank has for Google. It shows that Google has a Compete Rank of 10,788.

And that number means???

It’s Not Just A Salad

Friday, May 11th, 2007

I thought I would take a quick moment and write about what life is like right now with a new baby on the way. We have just hit 20 weeks and our baby girl is now kicking strong.

I’ve been married a few years and it is really interesting how the woman I am married to and love with all my heart has changed with me. Looking back she was once this girl who I considered to only be my girlfriend. Then as a year passed and my girlfriend was no longer my girlfriend, we were just together. Another year passed and then she became my fiancée. Before I knew it, that year passed and I was able to call my beautiful best friend, my wife. (more…)

FREAKONOMICS

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

FreakonomicsI could hardly put the book Freakonomics down once I started reading it. Over the past few years I have been finding a lot of enjoyment while reading social science books that explore & challenge contemporary norms.

In this book we are shown some hidden motivations with real-estate agents. We are shown how crafty analysis can catch teachers who manipulate standardized testing to prop-up their class’s grades. We get to delve deep into the world of drug dealing gangs and learn why most drug dealers still live with their moms.

We hear a provocative case made for the social impacts on abortion and how it affects society’s crime rates. A case is made how the change in abortion laws 20 years ago with Row v. Wade has dramatically changed current criminal activity.

Most timely for me, a few chapters on what makes a good parent and an analysis on what things matter when you’re a parent verse being obsessive compulsive about raising the perfect child.

When I completed reading this book I headed on over to the Freakonomics Blog where in short quick form the authors of this book run with a variety of other topics.

From a marketing standpoint I really like how they have incorporated their Blog around promoting the book. The sales pitch is not in-your-face or obnoxious and I would think any loyal readers of theirs would be interested in buying the book. The authors have gone out of their way to write so much content that as a reader you can get a good feeling for what’s expected when you buy the book.

This was sent to me this morning and had me cracking up. It hits way to close to home!

Thanks Azoogle!

Today I received a big stuffed envelope in the mail with all sorts of Azoogle gear! That is really cool of them especially since I think they spent more on mail costs then I probably made for them being an affiliate of theirs.

While running around the halls of AdTech San Francisco the other week I met a few of their crew in person and they are all seemed like a great group of people. I’ve been told several times now that their BlockBuster campaigns have been working real well for their affiliates.

Thanks again Azoogle for the personal delivery of SWAG!!

Drawing Attention So People Will Read & Start Linking To Your Blog

Friday, May 4th, 2007

When I logged into my Blog’s admin console this morning I found a bit of humor when I saw my Akismet Spam Protection had caught another 1,000 comment spam. If you don’t know, the art of comment spamming is when someone posts a comment on a Blog for the sol purpose of embedding a link which leads back to one of their sites. For a variety of reasons they hope to attract more visitors to their blog, attract the Search Engines and hope to artificially inflate their rankings.

I am sure compared to more popular sites that the amount of comment spam I receive is negligible but still ShandyKing.com receives a healthy few hundred a day. If it was not for having Akismet installed in my WordPress I would have to spend much wasted time manually filtering out the select few authentic comments I receive amongst the Spam.

At the rate I see comment spamming arrive to my Blog you would think Blog Spamming is still popular. Then again, I can not get over the number of people who send fake referral traffic to my Blog so they could get their Blogs URL stamped in my log files. But that’s a whole other story all together.

I remember when I first launched my Blog I was sort of thrilled when I got my first Spam. It sort of told me my URL as making its way around the web.

But this post is not how to spam your way to get links. When I first started this Blog I put quite a bit of effort into getting it noticed. With the number of new Blogs created each day, you have to do something to stand out!

Here are few things you can try that are not so evil yet deliver results: (more…)

Now You Hate America?

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

It seems in these days one can’t spend a weekend among friends or family without hearing someone spew some anti-Americanism dribble.

As I am repeatedly told over and over, the United States has become an isolationist nation that cares nothing about global consensus and does only what she pleases. That the United States hides behind her military might and uses the global dominance of her almighty dollar to strong arm other nations into servitude.

The argument I am being told is that we’re our own worst enemy and that we’ve created the hatred spewing from the Middle East. (more…)
