Internet Explorer (IE) 7 Slow Since Vista Upgrade

April 18th, 2007
Written By: Adam Sussman

I only use IE once in a while which is why I have not caught this issue till now but Internet Explorer is painfully slow since I upgraded to Vista. So slow the browser feels it has staled and I have had to hit Ctrl Alt Delete – jump into Task Manager and manually kill the application.

I did some looking around and came across an update Microsoft has released for this published 1/29/2007

Brief Description

This update resolves a performance issue with the Internet Explorer Phishing Filter when visiting web pages that contain multiple frames or when multiple frame navigations occur quickly.

Download IE Fix For Vista From Microsoft Here

I have installed it and it appears to have fixed the problem.

As a more savvy internet user, maybe you might want to turn off the phishing filter and stop having your browser report back your activity to MS?

Cause that would be to easy and I would have nothing to blog about?

Did that, it was still super slow.

Hi there, I have this problem as well but the fix does not work. When it tries to install the fix I receive: “This update does not apply to your system.”

The computer is brand new and Firefox works fine. IE 7 is slow and the only reason I would need to use it is that certain websites are incompatible with Firefox

My Internet Explorer takes minutes to load a new page or Tab but once it is finally open, I can navigate to the next page like normal. If I open another new IE window, it hangs for several minutes before it initially loads the home page and then acts normal too.

Firefox does not have this problem at all and I know that IE 7 did not initially have the problem when I first upgraded to Vista but it has had it since about a week after the initial clean install and I cannot fix it. I do not see any add-ons at all that should cause this problem and this update says it is not applicable for my version of Windows Vista as well like with Steve.

Let me guess…you have McAfee security software pre-installed when you bought the computer. That is the source of the problem. I uninstalled McAfee (and replaced it with another) and now webpages snap open on IE7. A search of the web shows that this has solved the problem for many others as well

I have the same problem. Eliminating the phishing did not speed it up.It is so slow that it oftens times out. Recently I had to reformat the HD . After reformatting it worked fine until I installed my printer/scanner and that is when the problem started. I use Firefox with no problem but some microsoft programs use IE to download information and that is when it times out.

This has been driving me crazy too. Slow to load new tabs on multiple OEM Vista laptops and workstations. Biggest impact came from two things:

    1) Disabling the GOOGLE toolbar addons (my IE7 showed two google addons). The speed of opening in a new tab improved 100%. Wonder if each tab causes some reload of the Google DLL or related processes.

    2) Disabled (uncheck) “auto detect settings” in IE tools>options>connections>Lan-settings caused a 100% improvement in the initial load speed of IE7 from the desktop shortcut.

    Hope this helps you too.

    Hi!

I have the same problem as discribed above. IE was not slow from the beginning, but it became slow 2 weeks after fresh Vista installation.

I have guinine Vista Bussiness x64, so I also downloaded and tried to install this phising filter fix, but I also got the same message: “This update does not apply to your system.”

I also have unchecked “auto detect settings”.

Has someone found the working solution yet?

Bought Dell laptop with Vista a couple of months ago and IE7 crashed every time the cursor was moved over a link. Pruning of Add ons solved the problem but after a couple of weeks IE7 became impossibly slow (with or without Add ons) and I replaced it with Firefox. I tried IE7 occasionally and until about 4 or 5 days ago, it was still slow. Today, it’s miraculously OK. Anyone got any suggestions as to what is going on?

Hay turning off the phishing filter worked for me. Much faster now. They really shouldn’t make that a default setting as the slow page loading had me using Firefox.

I had the same problem, slow loading pages via wireless. Found a recommendation on a different forum to roll back driver on wireless adapter - this worked great for me but slow loading pages came back in a few days. After some checking I found that I had Windows Update set to automatically update and this newer driver was one of the updates. This time I changed the settings in Windows Update so I would be notified of updates instead of the auto install. Now I just make sure I uncheck the box to skip that driver update and don’t install it… A very minor hassle compared to the slow web page loads!

Quick tip of the day for new users to IE (cos it seems people struggle with this).

To change the homepage to google simply visit the google website and select “set google as homepage”. Simple!!

Just upgraded to Vista from XP. IE was running very slow and sluggish compare to other browsers. Also, Google bar froze every time I typed a search string. No recommendations above helped. I also tried disabling all the IE plug-ins/add-ons. Nothing helped.

In my case, I “fixed” it by switching “Protected Mode” off. I hope to hear about “real” fixes for the issue from MS.
