XP to Vista Home Upgrade: Outlook 2003, Outlook Express & HotMail Issues

Windows VistaOver the past few months I’ve been slowly preparing to upgrade my new dual processor HP machine running XP to Windows Vista. I actually received the Vista upgrade for free when I purchased my machine even though it came installed with XP.

To prepare myself I picked up some DVD’s to perform a HP assisted backup. I later had to return the DVD’s cause I bought R/W instead of plane old R.

HP sent me some support disks to guide the installation and it was very easy to upgrade from XP to Vista. Now that I am opening my normal everyday programs for work I’ve come across issues with two applications. Surprisingly enough both of them are Microsofts.

First I have a big issue with Outlook Express since it is no longer supported under Vista. They now call their new application Windows Mail, but the real pisser is Windows Mail does not support HTTP calls, thus I can no longer use HotMail.

I’ve been using HotMail since the beginning of time and I even paid Microsoft an extra $20 a year so that I can use it with Outlook Express. They used to allow us to use HotMail for free with Outlook Express but they changed that a few years ago.

Well they changed this again. At first I was pissed that they changed this, but then after doing a quick search I found out Microsoft offers a new application called Windows Live Mail (desktop beta). I’ve signed up for it & merged 5 different mail accounts over. I’ve only played with Windows Live Mail for 6 or so hours but I am really impressed.

For my more serious email needs I’ve been using regular Outlook. Outlook 2003 to be more precise and since I’ve install Vista (Home Premium Express) I’ve been getting random errors with Outlook.

Not only am I getting random errors such as FXSEXT32.DLL which apparently means something to do with faxing, (that’s what I read when I Googled for it) but Outlook 2003 will not hold my stored passwords. Not only that but it was having problems handling custom SMTP ports.

I’ve decided to now toss Outlook 2003 from my machine and merge over the remaining “business” email addresses to Windows Live Mail.

I know, this is riveting blogging goodness.

I have a question for you…..what if you can’t upgrade to windows live mail, and use hotmail? I have used hotmail forever and outlook express forever as well. Is there anyway to get your hotmail into your computer?

I realize that you were playing around with they system, so I was wondering and a bit curious because I am getting a new computer that has Vista Home Premium pre-installed.

Could you please get back to me if you have the chance? I would appreciate it.

    Thanks

“ There are a few things to look at when your computer is running slow. some can be hardware and some can be software, and some can be the person who is sitting at your desk right now. Let’ s go ahead and check a few things. I find it easier to start with the cheapest and most simple checks, so we are not doing a bunch of useless work and not paying bundles for something that could have really been inexpensive.
