Too Hot For Hawaiian Luau

After 48 hours of no sleep and solid partying in Las Vegas for my brother’s bachelor party I flew back to Los Angeles on Saturday morning to record breaking heat.
Sat night was Luau night for my wife’s 30th birthday and the temperature hit 119 degrees in our city. Want to know what 119 degrees feels like, suck on a hair dryer!
119 was record breaking heat for all time and it was by far the worst it has ever gotten.
We had planned for over 40 people, though 50% of the people failed to make it due to the excessive heat. But the 50% that did make it to the party were the ones we really wanted to have come! SO THERE!
Here are a few tips to throwing a Hawaiian Luau themed party in 119 degree heat.
- You need at least 120lbs of ice to keep a large keg of Dos Equis cool. The 60 lbs of ice they deliver to your house will melt before the party starts. But don’t panic like I did and go and buy 240lbs of extra ice as this is way too much but it was nice and cool carrying it in.
- When renting a tropical frozen drink machine, double check the work of the installers and make sure the cool setting are turned up to max coolness otherwise you will have really cold slush.
- Offer lots of cold bottled waters. We had two large crates of it and they all went fast. You will need 60 – 80lbs of ice to keep the bottle waters cooled.
- Don’t go crazy on the food. We ordered way too much food and it turned out people don’t like to eat when it’s too hot.
- Buy lots of extension cords. Things had to be moved around a few times and for some reason all the plugs that needed to be plugged were in areas of the garden where there were no outlets.
Final Tips
- Do a day after party. Get together with a handful of friends the day after the party to clean up the mess and finish eating the rest of the food. A day after party is by far the best idea because playing host at a real party is not really relaxing.
- And finally, publicly say thank you to those people who worked all day outside setting things up while enduring the record breaking scorching heat. Be sure to check out Michelle Caplans amazing art!

Only crazy people have an outdoor party when it’s 119 degrees.

I guess that rules out roasting a whole pig in huge underground oven.
Aloha,
Dave.
