The Mind of an Expert

Could you be the next Mozart, Tiger Woods, Newton, Bobby Fisher, or that person you heard about who went to Harvard Medical School and graduated the top of their class?
In August, Scientific American magazine will have an article Secrets of the Expert Mind which asks the question, how does one become an expert in their field and what separates grandmasters from the average?
Since the beginning of the century many studies have been conducted trying to figure out how one becomes an expert and this article ties together years of in-depth analysis of chess grandmasters.
Experiments with blindfolding chess grandmasters and creating preset positions on the board have allowed scientists to conclude grandmasters are playing primarily by memory. The reason why they have achieved the grandmaster level is not from some special mental ability but from practice.
These studies were assessed over various other fields such as music, mathematics, reading, and sports and they have concluded prodigies are made, not born.
So what does it take for you to become the next master in your field, well there is a “10 year rule” that states is takes approximately a decade of heavy labor.

There are lots of very smart people that could be at the top of a field but they never go anywhere because they don’t have the ability to spend that much time on something. When a person is truely amazing they have the great mind and they have a great passion for what they do. If you can get those 2 things together you change the world.

Hey, great site. In my field, we see the good, the bad and the ugly ona daily basis. Real talent and outstanding skills result in success only when the individual works hard and has the will to make a difference.
Employers are always looking for candidates that exhibit the signs of success, such as a willingness to take on challenges and work that little bit harder than their colleagues to achieve noticeable results.
There are great opportunities in the medical billing field for thise who are willing to put in some extra effort. Also known as medical codeing or transcription, it is the sort of work that you can do from home as long as you have a computer and internet connection you can make good money. Although you may need some specialist knowledge about medical terminology, it’s not hard to learn. There are even some courses available to teach you how to do it. They can be expensive so be aware and shop around for the best option.
Another option would be to go work for a medical biling company or hospital in their admin department. Even the bigger medical practices have admin departments that deal with medical billing issues and need staff. You will get on-the-job training and then can go out and start your own business.

The “10 year rule” definately applies to medicine. I rarely see a good doctor who hasn’t been practicing at least that long…
